Discovered in 1932, the Amalfi Grotto called Emerald Grotto was once a dry grotto but later became flooded by sea water and owes its name to the usual colour of the water due to the way in which the light reflects off the rocks on the seabed. Inside the cavern measures 30 x 60m with a height of 24m and the on entering the visitor is surrounded by blues and greens with stalactites and stalagmites hovering over and emerging from the water, joining to make columns that reach the roof. Also of great interest is the ceramic crib, 4m below on the grotto bed.

Taking a boat excursion is a very pleasurable way to see the Amalfi Grotto, the coast and enjoy a day at sea. If you happen to be in Amalfi in June, you can enjoy the Historical Regatta that takes place every 4 years there, in rotation between Genoa, Pisa and Venice. It starts in Cape Vettica and ends in Amalfi.

A place worth a visit near Amalfi is Fiordo di Furore, a small village situated on a vertical stretch of hillside, where you can see the dramatic 'Fiordo' or fiord, which is a cluster of old fishermen's houses built into the side of the rocky gorge.
